The CN Tower celebrated its 30th birthday in 2006, and as millions of visitors discover every year, it is still one of the world’s premier tourist attractions. An architectural achievement of staggering proportions, the tower’s immense height dwarfs even the huge buildings that make up Toronto’s downtown core. An essential point of reference for Toronto and the GTA, the tower’s distinctive shape dominates the skyline for miles around. If you’re lost, look for the tower and you’ll have your directions.
Built in 1973, the CN Tower was constructed by the Canadian National Railroad on railroad land which runs along the shoreline of Lake Ontario. One of the tower’s primary purposes was to act as a radio broadcast antenna. The transmitter’s height allows broadcasts of radio and television to reach a large section of Southern Ontario, now home to more than 10 million Canadians. Many Toronto residents don’t need cable television because many local TV and radio stations broadcast from the CN Tower.

The Height of Excellence, a film playing at the Maple Leaf cinema in the CN Tower, shows the development of the tower and the amazing feats of engineering that created it. From inspiration to celebration, 30 years have passed. Although contemporary buildings which will surpass the CN Tower in height are being built in other international centres, none have the appeal of the CN Tower as a tourist destination. Every year, visitors enjoy sitting among the clouds and soaking in the spectacular beauty of Southern Ontario and the Great Lakes.
