The works of Canada’s renowned Group of Seven are well represented at the Art Gallery of Ontario. A long-time associate of the group (they named her “The Mother of Modern Arts”), Emily Carr’s powerful paintings of British Columbia have long been considered a national treasure.
Emily Carr was born in British Columbia and received her extensive training in San Francisco; Paris, France and London, England. She is thought to be one of the foremost female painters of the last century. She studied her art and created her works in the post Victorian-era, where women were discouraged from painting in oils, and acceptable subjects for art were very conventional.
The Art of Emily Carr
Emily Carr’s paintings were heavily influenced by the beautiful natural scenery and native art of British Columbia and Alaska. Many of her most famous oil paintings feature totemic sculptures, like those seen in Totem Poles, Kitseukl, which she painted in1912. Her extensive collection of landscapes is on display at The Vancouver Art Gallery.
As the artistic culture of the time was extremely conservative, Carr’s work was largely unrecognized by the art world in Vancouver. She had abandoned painting until 1920 when she met various members of the Group of Seven and was invited to participate in an exhibition of Canadian West Coast Art, Native and Modern, at the National Art Gallery.
A writer in her later years, Carr published several novels in the 1940s. After her death in 1945, a number of her volumes were published posthumously. The Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design is a Canadian University located in Vancouver BC.
The extensive exhibit devoted to Carr at the Art Gallery of Ontario is a rare opportunity to study the life of this landmark Canadian artist and experience the beauty of British Columbia through her eyes.
