A Comedy of Multiple Organisms
Cloud 9 by Caryl Churchill (Top Girls) is a playfully gender-bending and wonderfully theatrical show that gives a vivid impression of the sex war in the heyday of radical feminism - and before the arrival of AIDS.
While the first part is set in colonial Africa, and demonstrates the male colonization of women in Victorian times, the second half is set in the liberated seventies.
Audacious and outrageous. This award-winning play wraps gender-bending characters in thought-provoking satire. Political and sexual oppression are explored in a time-twisted structure: 100 years pass between acts set in British colonial Africa and modern London, with recurring characters aging 25 years. The Toronto theatre production of CLOUD 9, features Ann-Marie MacDonald, Ben Carlson, Megan Follows, Yanna McIntosh, Evan Buliung, David Jansen and Blair Williams and is directed by Alisa Palmer (Dora Mavor Moore Award for Top Girls).
Sexual content, strong language, gunshots, smoking (non-tobacco), brilliant dialogue, intense comedy, compelling drama, unforgettable characters - in short, a contemporary masterpiece!
