There's a warm Jamaican breeze blowing through Toronto this summer and it comes in the form of yet another North American premiere.
Direct from London's West End comes the late Perry Henzell's stage adaptation of his iconic '70s film The Harder They Come. A cult hit when it was released, the Jamaican movie launched Jimmy Cliff and reggae music onto the world stage. Now this brilliant new musical production by the esteemed Royal Stratford East tells the cautionary tale with a passion that energizes audiences as only few shows have ever done.
Exuberant and radical, this production breaks all the rules as it tells the story of a country boy who makes for the bright lights of Kingston, Jamaica. With a head full of songs, including You Can Get It If You Really Want, Many Rivers To Cross, Higher and Higher, Rivers of Babylon and The Harder They Come, he dreams of making it big as a reggae star. When the harsh reality of the Jamaican music scene drives him into a fast and furious life as an outlaw, he would rather die than kill his dream.
The sizzling, street-inspired reggae music is delivered with amazing energy by a cast who seem intent on searing the songs on your soul. The result is a terrific night of theatre that has audiences dancing in the aisles. A fluid, colorful, and sordid reflection of island life in the early 1970's, The Harder They Come is not just a show but rather an experience. After you've seen it live on stage, you'll understand what all of the fuss is about.
"EXUBERANT MUSICAL! EXTRAORDINARY! YOU'LL WANT TO SEE IT AGAIN AND AGAIN!"
Daily Mail, UK
"A SUPERB PRODUCTION THAT FAITHFULLY CAPTURES NOT JUST THE MOVIE'S MUSIC AND CHARACTERS, BUT ASO ITS SOUL"
Evening Standard
"IRRESISTIBLE! THRILLING! TREMENDOUS!"
The Telegraph, UK
