Hummingbird Centre
The Hummingbird Centre began as the O’Keefe Centre in 1960, built by the O’Keefe brewing company to provide a venue for a variety of performing arts events. The centre was named The Hummingbird Centre in recognition of a gift from Hummingbird Communications, a Canadian software company (now Open Text Software). The Hummingbird is one of Toronto’s major theatre venues, much like the Royal Alexandra Theatre, or the Canon Theatre. The Hummingbird Theatre is now named the Sony Centre for Performing Arts and major plans are underway for the development of a spectacular new building. The New Sony Centre will have a very unique and unusual architectural design.

Until the 2006 opening of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, the Hummingbird Centre was home to the National Ballet of Canada and Canadian Opera Company. The Hummingbird Centre opened with a pre-Broadway production of Camelot starring Richard Burton, Julie Andrews and Robert Goulet and still plays host to major theatrical productions and popular events such as beauty pageants.
