Toronto is home to the Canada's largest ballet troupe, the National Ballet of Canada which is the only Ballet company to offer traditional full-evening ballet classics. The Ballet company showcases Canadian dancers performing in the Royal British style. The company was established by Celia Franca in 1951 and its first performance was on November 12, 1951 at the old Eaton Auditorium in Toronto.
The National Ballet has more than 60 dancers and its own full symphony orchestra. It presents the classical dance repertoire along with contemporary works. The National Ballet encourages the creation of new ballets and the development of Canadian choreographers. The company's artistic director is Karen Cain, a former principal dancer who retired in 1998.
This summer Alice's Adventures in Wonderland will play from June 4-25. The seasonal classic, The Nutcracker, also returns this fall with tickets going on sale September 26, 2011.
