Royal Alexandra Theatre

The Royal Alexandra Theatre is Toronto’s oldest and most revered of Toronto theatres. The Royal Alex was the creation of Cawthra Mulock and John M. Lyle, in the style of an Edwardian Jewel Box. Named after Queen Alexandra, the wife of King Edward VII, (who sent letters entitling it to the royal designation), the grand theatre used imported marble, hand carved cherry-wood and ornate guilded plaster atop Toronto’s first steel framed structure. The metal structure allowed for a cantilevered design which eliminated the viewing obstructions common with wooden structures.
