The Rogers Centre (SkyDome) has the world's first fully retractable stadium roof, made up of four panels, three of which retract. The Skydome's roof weighs 11,000 tons (the equivalent of 3,732 automobiles!), covers 8 acres, is 674 feet in diameter and rises 282 feet at its highest point. When opening or closing for sports events or bad weather, the roof moves at a rate of 71 feet per minute and takes 20 minutes to fully open or close.

The field under the dome is covered with more than 100 rolls of Astroturf, fastened together by 8 miles of zippers. In a little more than 8 hours the field can be completely converted from baseball to football facilities. The SkyDome JumboTron, a 115-foot-by-33-foot video display built for $17 Million has been replaced a new video scoreboard display by Daktronics. The new screen provides better resolution and is the same size as the old JumboTron.

The Skydome Hotel is one of Toronto’s most famous hotels. The 348-room edifice has 70 rooms which overlook the playing field. The Rogers Center also boasts its own Hard Rock Café with a view of the playing field. McDonald’s Restaurants are essential to the Skydome experience, providing most of the concession services for sporting events. Despite its popularity, the skydome hotel rates are high and there is no indoor waterslide as Delta Chelsea has.

The Rogers Centre is located in Downtown Toronto, on Blue Jays Way, just off of Front Street. The Centre is conveniently located next to the CN Tower, and near the Air Canada Centre, home of the Toronto Maple Leafs and another popular concert location. The Hockey Hall of Fame is just a couple of blocks away, and the Eaton Centre is just a half mile north on Bay Street in the heart of the entertainment district. Almost all of these attractions are connected to the PATH system, an underground walkway connecting the buildings in the downtown core. Make the Skydome and a Toronto Blue Jays game or Toronto Argonauts game a part of your entertaining Toronto vacation.
