Toronto’s CNE (also known as “The EX”) is a well known exhibition and one of the top Toronto events of the year drawing visitors from around the world. Beginning in 1937 as an agricultural fair, the EX made the shift to an amusement park when Conklin Midway shows began to provide entertainment and rides. Every year, during the last few weeks of August, 1.3 million people visit the CNE to sample the food and culture, and thrill themselves with the midway amusement park rides, music, and food exhibitions. The CNE grounds are located between Bathurst and Dufferin Street, near the waterfront, just west of downtown Toronto.
Canada’s Wonderland has drawn away some of the thrill-seekers from the CNE, but the Canadian International Air Show (free with CNE admission) which showcases a variety of planes and jets is still an extremely popular event. The Snowbird flying troupe makes a yearly appearance along with Canadian military aircraft performing their flying demonstrations. Major attractions and exhibits are also held in the automotive building, food building, as well as the CNE Casino. Admission to Ontario Place, (which adjoins the exhibition grounds) is included with admission to the CNE.
The CNE also hosts a kids’ baseball tournament, the air show, and a cultural fair every year.
The EX is a great economic engine for the City of Toronto. Visitors are introduced to the city’s other major cultural attractions: The CN Tower, Skydome, Casa Loma, Toronto Zoo, Royal Ontario Museum and Art Gallery of Ontario.
CNE tickets are available at the CNE grounds during the CNE celebration.
